Minkkinen est né en 1945 à Helsinki, Finlande. Lorsqu'il a six ans, ses parents émigrent aux États- Unis (il y réside toujours).
Enfant, il fut opéré d'un bec de lièvre : cette difformité, la dif cile acceptation de son visage, est sans doute l'une des clés de son œuvre future. Il redécouvre la Finlande en 1967 lorsqu'il a 22 ans. Il s'intéresse à la photographie et s'inscrit à un stage que Diane Arbus doit donner à l'été 1971 (Sa photographie du jeune garçon à la grenade de Central Park l'a fasciné : c'est son propre portrait qu'il a cru y voir). Après des études en philosophie et littérature, il s'oriente vers la photographie, et entre à la fa- meuse Rhode Island School of Design où ses maîtres seront Harry Callahan et Aaron Siskind. Depuis ses premières recherches photographiques des années 70, déjà marquées du style unique qu'il perfectionnera au l des années, il n'aura de cesse de poursuivre une œuvre qui est aujourd'hui l'une des plus importante et des plus constantes dans le genre de l'autoportrait.


Depuis quarante ans, Minkkinen construit une œuvre photographique dont il est le principal sujet.
Cela prend la forme d'un jeu à la fois visuel et physique entre son corps et la nature : appareil sur pied, il compose soigneusement une image et imagine comment son corps, prenant position dans ce cadre, entrera dans une fusion étrange, inattendue, avec le paysage.


Sa photographie est donc une installation où l'imaginaire et la prévisualisation ont une place prépondérante (il ne voit pas l'image finale lorsqu'il déclenche). C'est aussi une mise en danger, un dévoilement : il pose nu, parfois dans des environnements et des positions pour le moins inconfortables.


Il faut noter qu'il n'y a aucune manipulation numérique dans ses photographies. C'est par la seule imagination visuelle et grâce à une performance physique souvent étonnante (devant certaines images, on songe à la maîtrise d'un danseur ou d'un yogi), que Minkkinen crée ses images.


Leur beauté plastique tient à la poésie d'une situation improbable, comme surgie d'un rêve, dé ant le sens visuel.
On peut voir l'œuvre de Minkkinen comme une tentative de fusion, de réconciliation primordiale et panthéiste entre soi et le monde. Entre l'intimité du corps et l'immensité de la nature. Cette réconciliation passe effectivement par le corps, par sa capacité à devenir arbre, à se confondre avec les rochers, mais aussi à désigner le lointain, à s'approprier l'espace infini comme s'il était une partie détachée du corps mais toujours relié à lui. Dans ses bras recourbés, Minkkinen absorbe l'horizon et touche les nuages, et la peau de ses jambes se confond avec l'écorce des bouleaux.
La nudité est primordiale dans son travail et à plusieurs titres. Minkkinen mentionne dans ses textes l'expérience inoubliable de fusion avec la nature qu'elle lui apporte.

 

La dimension érotique est certes présente, mais c'est aussi, simplement, la proximité essentielle, archaïque, entre le corps, les éléments, la nature, qui appelle la nudité.

 

Dans les rares images où Minkkinen se photographie dans la ville, c'est alors, à l'inverse, l'incongruité de la nudité qui vient heurter et comme révéler l'étrangeté de l'environnement urbain (comme si un dieu ancien apparaissait dans nos villes).
