Jungjin Lee, après avoir étudié la céramique à l'Université (Séoul), s'est orientée, en autodidacte, vers la photographie. Son premier travail personnel fut de suivre durant une année un vieil homme, qui, isolé dans une cabane de montagne, survivait grâce à la vente de sa récolte de ginseng sauvage. Ce travail devint un livre, une exposition, et un document historique, car il est la dernière trace d'un mode de vie aujourd'hui disparu.
L’artiste utilise la photographie pour poursuivre une recherche intérieure quasi mystique, une méditation sur notre place dans le monde, sur notre rapport à la nature et aux objets.
La puissance visuelle et émotionnelle des images de Jungjin Lee est inséparable de leur forme. Travaillant sur du papier coréen traditionnel (en fibre de mûrier) enduit à la brosse d'une émul- sion photographique, elle imprime sur cette matière le geste de sa main, comme si la brosse se frayait un chemin dans les nuages, les arbres et les roches.
